Mr. Abubakari Ahmed, a PhD student in Sustainability Science at the University of Tokyo is among 25 winners of this year’s Green Talent Awards. Ahmed served as the first Technical Officer for the Adaptation at Scale in the Semi-Arid Regions (ASSAR) Project hosted by the Institute for Environment and Sanitation Studies (IESS) at the University of Ghana. Ahmed’s research focuses on assessing the sustainability of large-scale land acquisitions for biofuels in Ghana. The tailored interdisciplinary methodological approach developed by Ahmed induced his selection by the high-ranking jury of German experts without a second thought!

Ahmed and his colleague award-winners as part of the package are granted unique access to the country’s research elite. There is also an international forum for High Potentials in Sustainable Development where award winners will travel through Germany for two weeks to visit hotspots of green science.
In addition, the award winners have opportunities to conduct research in Germany for up to three months. The “Green Talents – International Forum for High Potentials in Sustainable Development” hosted by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) aims to promote the international exchange of innovative green ideas. The award, under the patronage of Minister Professor Johanna Wanka, honours young researchers each year.
This year’s winners who are from 22 countries and of different scientific disciplines were recognised for their outstanding achievements in making societies more sustainable. Further information on the Award can be found here and here.
